In recent years, Sony has struggled in the Indian smartphone market. The company primarily deals in the premium smartphone space, but that space is primarily occupied by the likes of Samsung and OnePlus in the country. It doesn't help that the company has made poor decisions in the past with respect to product pricing. The Sony Xperia XZ2 was announced back at Mobile World Congress in February. After five months, Sony is finally launching the Snapdragon 845-powered flagship in India. Apart from the delayed launch, the company doesn't seem to have learnt from its past mistakes as the Xperia XZ2 will be available for ₹72,990 ($1,063) in India, which makes it one of the most expensive Android flagships in the country.
Sony hasn't launched the more compact Xperia XZ2 Compact in India. The Xperia XZ2 Premium, which recently went on pre-order in the US, also hasn't been brought to India yet (its pricing is even higher than the Xperia XZ2 internationally). The Xperia XZ2 succeeds the Xperia XZ1 as Sony's latest flagship in India, and its specifications are noted below.

We have already done a full review of the Sony Xperia XZ2. We found the phone to positively stand out in several key respects against other 2018 Android flagships, although it does have a few weaknesses as well.
The phone features Sony's Ambient Flow language, which is the successor to the company's previous Omnibalance and Loop Surface design languages. It's the first Sony flagship to feature an 18:9 display with a 5.7-inch display size. Newer smartphone launches with fewer bezels make the Xperia XZ2's design seem less than eye-catching, though, as the phone still has fairly thick bezels on the top and bottom.
The HDR 18:9 display also has Sony's Advanced X-Reality engine, which up-converts non-HDR downloaded and streaming videos to "HDR-quality."
In terms of design, the Xperia XZ2 has 3D Gorilla Glass on both sides, an aluminium frame, curved-off corners, and a dedicated shutter key. It's Sony's first flagship phone to have a back-mounted fingerprint sensor.
The phone's Motion Eye rear camera has a 19MP Exmor RS sensor with a 1/2.3-inch sensor size, f/2.0 aperture, phase detection and laser autofocus, an LED flash, predictive hybrid autofocus, and 5-axis gyro-based stabilization. 4K HDR video recording is supported, and the Xperia XZ2 can record super slow motion video in 720p and 1080p video at 960fps.
The Xperia XZ2 does not have a 3.5mm headphone jack. It has a Hi-Fi DAC and features Qualcomm's aptX HD Bluetooth audio codec. It has 20 percent louder S Force speakers as compared to its predecessor. It also has the Sony Dynamic Vibration System, that makes use of a low-frequency actuator to deliver custom synchronized haptic feedback in specific apps and games.
The phone has an IP68 rating for water resistance. It's powered by a 3,180mAh battery, which we found to deliver great battery life in our review.
Sony Xperia XZ2 – Pricing and availability
The Xperia XZ2 comes only in a single Liquid Black color in India. It's priced at a staggering ₹72,990 ($1,063) in the country, and it will be available from August 1 through Sony Center and select mobile stores in India.
Our view: The Sony Xperia XZ2 is practically the most expensive Android flagship in the market as of now. It's priced higher than even the Samsung Galaxy S9+, the Google Pixel 2 XL, and the Huawei P20 Pro. Snapdragon 845-powered phones such as the OnePlus 6, the Asus ZenFone 5Z, and the Vivo NEX are available for hundreds of dollars less in India, which means that the Xperia XZ2 has a very poor value proposition. Pricing its smartphones higher than the market average likely won't have a positive impact on Sony's sales, which is why we fail to understand Sony's decision here.
