Google Assistant started late in the market compared to Apple's Siri and Amazon's Alexa, but they have been catching up really fast. In 2016, Amazon controlled 93% of the market share. Last year, that dropped to 66%. This didn't bother Google because they had a game plan that would add more integrated tasks to the Google Home then Amazon could with the Echo. Justin Uberti has just announced on his Twitter account that version 37 of Google Duo will integrate with Google Assistant so that you can start a hands-free video call.
Justin Uberti is a Principal Engineer at Google and both the creator and lead engineer of Google Duo. He was also one of the folks leading the Google Allo project, which hasn't been getting as much attention from the company compared to RCS. So this has left the team with more resources to put toward Google Duo. It's actually a really good video calling application that produces high-quality images, uses very little bandwidth, and it's available on both Android and iOS.
Google wants to make it easier to make audio and video calls when your hands are busy. So whether you are at home, at work, or just have your phone mounted to your dashboard, you can now initiate a Google Duo audio or video calls using only your voice. In the Google Assistant settings, there is a section for "Voice and video calls." This is where you can select Duo as your default calling method. All you have to say is "Hey Google, video call Mom." Currently, most people only have the "Voice calls" option, but "Videos calls" is slowly rolling out.
