The LG G7 ThinQ launched early last month and is already seeing its first major update. This one's a big one too, as it marks the first non-Google Pixel device to support AR stickers. We've already seen unofficial ports of AR Stickers to other devices, first with the Nexus 6P, OnePlus 3/3T and the Xiaomi Mi 5. Things got even better, however, when ARCore (a prerequisite to AR Stickers) began to support the Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9+, as it meant owners of both devices could enjoy these stickers too. Still, it wasn't the same, and now the LG G7 ThinQ is the first device to officially get access to them – and through a software update as well.
For those who aren't really sure, AR Stickers are 3D augmented reality characters that you can place and interact with in the world around you. It's a bit of a gimmick, but both Star Wars and Stranger Things characters were added as limited edition characters. Also included were food-based characters and text messages, so you could have a bit of fun with the app with your friends. The LG G7 ThinQ is the first non-Google Pixel device to receive these features natively and without having to port any applications or frameworks for it to work.
Other features included in the update aren't too noteworthy, with general improvements to performance, camera, and audio, along with increased system stability. It's clear that AR Stickers are the main point of the update here. The update is rolling out to Korean handsets now and it's unknown when (or if) other regions will also get the update. It could very well be a South Korean exclusive that will never be released to other handsets. If it does come to places such as the US, then it will also be likely that users will be at the mercy of waiting on carriers to release the update as well.
