Google Camera v5.2 adds Google Lens mode to compatible devices

Google Lens is Google's ambitious product that expands upon the ideas introduced in Google Photos. Lens attempts to bring improvements brought about by the use of machine learning and AI to photographs in a live, real-time environment. Past updates to Google Lens began adding in features like smart text selection, a style match feature to search for familiar items, and a real-time mode that can proactively surface information quickly.

The real-time feature, while handy by itself within the Google Assistant application, would still need a user to install a separate application. Google foresaw this limitation and allowed Google Lens to be integrated directly into pre-installed camera applications, where a curious user is much more likely to wander into. The real-time functionality began its rollout recently, and made its way to ASUS devices through the PixelMaster camera app and to Motorola devices through the Moto camera app. Phones like the OnePlus 6 received real-time Lens within the Camera app in the Android P Beta 2 update, while the Moto Z3 Play and LG G7 launched with Google Lens integration.

It was finally time Google supported devices saw the same love. The latest update to Google Camera adds in a Google Lens Mode, bringing the real-time Lens functionality to Google Pixel, Nexus, and other Google supported devices.

You do need Google Camera v5.2.025 to access Lens functionality from within the app. Once you have the latest version of the Camera app installed, simply access Google Lens mode through the hamburger menu. Next, point your camera at objects around you and watch Google Lens identify the object by placing a colored dot on it. Simply tap on this dot to bring up information about the object.

Download Google Camera from the Play Store or grab the APK right here.
