Exclusive: Moto Z3 Play and 5G Moto Mod Showcased in New Leaked Pictures

Last week, we published a leaked set of specifications and features for the upcoming Moto Z3 Play, Lenovo's third (and possibly final) generation of modular smartphones. Now, XDA-Developers has obtained more photos of the Z3 Play, showing off the design and a Moto Mod that enables 5G connectivity.

The pictures provided to us seemingly come from internal Lenovo creative material, and showcase the phone from the front without attachments, and from the back with 5G Moto Mod attached. In case you need a refresher, the Moto Z3 Play will sport the Snapdragon 636 processor with 4GB of RAM, a 3,000mAh battery in what the company calls "one of the thinnest premium designs", a 6-inch 18:9 FHD+ AMOLED display, and dual cameras on the back. It'll also support microSD cards to expand the 32GB or 64GB of storage. For software, the company is adding a few camera features, and "Moto Experiences" and further refining tried-and-true functionality like Moto Display and Moto Voice. You can read more about the specifications and features in our previous article.

In the image above, you can see the Moto Z3 Play from the front, with some respectable top and bottom bezels. Sticking with the Moto Mod strategy has forced Lenovo to iterate upon the canvas they introduced three generations ago, so there's only so much they can refine with each release. In that sense, this looks to be one of the better outcomes considering how bulky Moto Z phones have been. Note that while the image showcases a bottom "pill" navigation bar like on the P Developer Preview 2, it's merely a custom Moto implementation for Android 8.1 Oreo. Beyond that, we see a slew of Google apps as expected from the stock-ish experience Moto phones are known to provide.

The 5G Moto Mod has been leaked in the past, and it's a way for the company to bring 5G connectivity to the Moto Z series. We don't know much else about this Moto Mod and we aren't sure whether it's truly intended as something people should or would use frequently (in 2016 the company had discussed a Moto Mod that'd add 5G capabilities to the Z line). That said, the second image also shows us how the 5G Mod seemingly adds an antennae lip at the top, and while it's a bit thick, it gives us an idea of how thin the Moto Z3 Play will be.

That's everything we know about the upcoming Moto Z3 Play so far, but we'll let you know if we hear any more details. Be sure to check out our previous article for a thorough run-down of the phone's specification and features, and stay tuned to the XDA Portal for more leaks and in-depth device coverage!
