Honor 9 Lite update brings Face Unlock feature in India

Late last year, Huawei announced the Honor 9 Lite, an affordable smartphone that emphasized battery life, build quality, and photography. Since the device's release, the company has continued to support it by bringing it to other countries, releasing the kernel source code, and issuing multiple software updates. Now, the Honor 9 Lite is receiving an over-the-air update in India that adds a highly requested facial recognition feature.

It's the trendy Face Unlock feature that has taken the smartphone community by storm in recent months. In January, the Honor View 10 got an update with the nifty feature, and just this month, Honor updated both the Honor 9 and the Honor 7X with it, too.

Honor 9 Lite owners in India are next in line — it's coming as part of an update. According to Honor, the new firmware has started rolling out in batches and will reach all devices by March 5, 2018.

Face Unlock has become such a highly requested feature that XDA Senior Member ante0 created a port of Face Unlock for the Honor 8 Pro and the Mate 9. XDA Senior Member Blackball confirmed that the port also works for the Huawei P10 Plus, and it's believed to work on other EMUI 8.0 devices, as well.

We were impressed with the Honor 9 Lite in our time with it. XDA's own Ronald Comstock did an unboxing and first impressions video of it earlier this month, and Adam wrote up a detailed hands-on overview of what the device had to offer. For the price, the phone's build quality, gaming performance, and battery life is quite impressive, and handily beats a number of similarly-priced competitors from other OEMs. But for a device that ships with four cameras, the quality of its photos left us expecting more. Then again, considering it costs just €229 ($282.13), it's a little unrealistic to expect it to check every box.
