HMD Global Announces Nokia 8 Sirocco, Nokia 7 Plus, new Nokia 6, and Nokia 1 Android Go Phone

Leave it to Finnish company HMD Global, which just came off a wildly successful year (it sold 70 million smartphones in 2017), to unveil a new Android Go smartphone, a feature phone, three new flagships, and a first-of-its-kind Android One partnership with Google.

At Mobile World Congress 2018 in Barcelona, Spain, HMD Global pulled no punches with the Nokia 8 Sirocco, its most powerful smartphone to date; the Nokia 7 Plus and the new Nokia 6; the Nokia 1; and the Nokia 8810 Reloaded.

Android One and Pro  Camera

Nokia is taking a different tact with Android One than other OEMs. At a press conference on Sunday, it announced that all of its 2018 devices — including the Nokia 8 Sirocco, Nokia 7 Plus, and new Nokia 6 — will be a part of Google's Android One program.

The company is committing to delivering at least two years of monthly security updates, Google Play Protect, and a curated nset of preloaded apps to its devices. And when Android P's released later this year, all of its new handsets will get the update.

It's the "largest collaboration on Android One yet," according to Google.

Separately, the company announced Pro Camera, a photo app that'll come to all Nokia phones with Zeiss optics later this year. In additional to "professional" modes that'll let you adjust things like exposure and brightness, it'll support Nokia's Dual-sight "bothie" camera feature that snaps photos from the front and rear camera simultaneously and combines them into a collage. It'll also feature a new AI-powered imaging feature that'll allow you to modify the lighting of images after you've taken them, and an augmented reality feature that'll let you overlay animated characters on photos.

The Nokia 8 Sirocco doesn't cut corners. The stainless steel, IP67-rated design, which Nokia says has 3.5 times the structural integrity of 6000 series aluminum smartphones, looks a bit like Samsung's Galaxy Note 8 from a distance. A curved edge-to-edge Quad HD (2560 x 1440) OLED 18:9 display dominates the front, shielded by a shatter-resistant Gorilla Glass panel covering 95% of its surface.

The phone's camera module, which sits adjacent to a dual-tone flash, comprises a 12MP wide-angle sensor with a f/1.75 aperture and 13MP telephoto camera with a f/2.6 aperture. There's a 5MP sensor with a f/2.0 aperture and LED flash on the front, and under the hood a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 system-on-chip. It's paired with 4GB of RAM and 128GB of inbuilt storage, and a 3,260mAh battery with Qi wireless charging and Qualcomm QuickCharge 4.0 compatibility.

Finally, there's a three-microphone array with Nokia's Ozo spatial audio technology, and a smart amplifier feature that enhances the sound quality of the phone's loudspeakers.

The Nokia 8 Sirocco will go on sale in April in select markets for €749 ($920).

The Nokia 7 Plus is measurably improved from last year's Nokia 7. It's built from a single block of aluminum and features six layers of "ceramic feel" paint, and has a 6-inch Full HD+ (2160 x 1080) 18:9 display, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 system-on-chip paired with 4GB of RAM, and 64GB of storage (expandable up to 256GB). Despite that powerful hardware, the handset's 3,800mAh battery delivers up to 14.5 hours of battery life.

The Nokia 7 Plus's other major feature, a dual rear camera with a dual-tone LED flash, consists of a 13MP primary camera with a f/2.6 aperture and a 12MP secondary sensor with a f/1.75 aperture. The front camera is improved from last year's Nokia 7 — it's a 16MP fixed sensor with a f/2.0 aperture (up from 5MP), and features Zeiss optics.

The Nokia 7 Plus, like the Nokia 8 Sirocco, has a three-microphone array that captures spatial audio and a smart amplifier feature. It'll go on sale in April later this year in select markets for €399 ($490).

HMD Global refreshed the Nokia 6 at MWC 2018. The new model features a "seamless aluminum unibody" design, Zeiss optics, a facial recognition feature, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 630 system-on-chip (up from the Snapdragon 430), and Qi wireless charging. HMD Global says that the CPU and GPU are 80 percent and 60 more powerful, respectively, than the outgoing Nokia 6's chips.

The 2.5D Full HD (1920 x 1080) 16:9 screen is the same size as last year's at 5.5 inches, and the cameras' megapixel counts haven't been improved from last year's 16MP (rear) and 8MP (front). But the 3,000mAh battery charges to 50 percent in just 30 minutes, and the phone delivers an impressive 12.5 hours of playback.

the new Nokia 6 be available in Silver, Blue, and Black with secondary iron, blue, and gold accents when it goes on sale in April, and will come in two models: one with 3GB RAM/32GB storage and a pricier model with 4GB RAM/64GB storage. The 3GB variant starts at €279 ($343).

Nokia 1

Specs Nokia 8 Sirocco
Display 4.5-inch FWVGA (854×480) IPS
Processor MediaTek MT6737M (Quad Core 1.1GHz)
Memory 1GB
Storage 8GB (expandable via microSD card up to 128GB
Rear Camera 5MP
Front Camera 2MP
Battery 2,150mAh
Connectivity 802.11 b/g/n, GPS/AGPS, Bluetooth 4.2, Micro USB 2.0
Software Android Oreo (Go edition)

Not to be outdone by TCL, which announced the Android Go-powered Alcatel 1X smartphone earlier this week, Nokia took the wraps off the Nokia 1 on Sunday.

The Nokia 1, an entry-level smarphone bound for "key developing markets", runs Android Oreo (Go edition), a version of Android optimized for low-end devices. It comes preloaded with lightweight Google apps including Google Maps Go, Files Go, Gmail Go, YouTube Go, and it's also one of the first phones with the Google Assistant for Android (Go edition), a low-overhead version of the Google Assistant with fewer features. (The only supported language is English, and it can't set reminders or control smart home devices.)

The Nokia 1 Android Go's hardware isn't what you might consider cutting edge, but it's par for the course for its price point. The polycabronate handset has a 4.5-inch HD IPS display, a quad-core MediaTek MT6737M clocked at 1.1GHz, 1GB of RAM, 8GB of internal storage (expandable to 128GB with a microSD card), and a 2,150mAh removable battery.

It'll be available starting in April for €79 ($85) in "key markets", and come in two colors, Warm Red and Dark Blue, alongside Nokia's new Xpress-on accessory covers.

Nokia 8110 Reloaded

Nokia also announced a feature phone: the Nokia 8810 Reloaded. It's the latest addition to Nokia's Original series, which kicked off with the Nokia 3310 last year, and it's a "candy bar" slider phone with 4G connectivity.

The Nokia 8110 might not match up to the Nokia 8 Pro in terms of raw processor power, but it's a capable phone all its own. Beneath the plastic sheath is a full-color 2.4-inch QVGA curved display, Qualcomm's 205 Mobile Platform (MSM8905 Dual Core 1.1 GHz), 512GB of RAM, and 4GB of storage (expandable via microSD). A 2MP rear camera on the back handles photo-taking duties, and a 1,500mAh battery delivers up to 25 days of standby time and 6 hours of video playback.

Uniquely, the Nokia 8810 comes preloaded a collection of apps for its Series 30+ operating system, including Facebook, Google Maps, and Google Search.

Other key specs include Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.1, GPS, microUSB 2.0, and a 3.5mm headphone jack, and a portable hotspot feature.

It'll launch in Europe in May for around $100, and come in two colors: Traditional Black and Banana Yellow.
