RED Hydrogen One Specs: Snapdragon 835, 4500 mAh Battery, and Headphone Jack Confirmed

Ever since RED shocked the smartphone industry with the announcement of the Hydrogen One smartphone last year, people have been clamoring to get more information about it. RED is a company known for its ultra-premium and very expensive video recording hardware, and until this week, it's been very hush-hush about the phone, only letting select people try out the hardware. Until recently, all we knew about the Hydrogen One was that it would be modular and have a holographic display — it wasn't until later we learned about the technology RED was using for the holographic display,

Now, though, RED has released information about the Hydrogen One's hardware specifications, design, carrier support, and release date. Details came into focus on Tuesday in a forum thread posted by RED CEO Jim Jannard.

RED Hydrogen One Specs

Both the unlocked and carrier-locked variants of the RED Hydrogen One will have a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 system-on-chip. As previous renders have shown, the phone is equipped with a 3.5mm headphone port and a USB Type-C port, plus a dual SIM slot that lets you use either two SIM cards or one SIM card and a microSD card. The team has also been working on multi-channel spatial sound system that'll work on the phone's stereo speakers as well as connected headphones.

The Hydrogen One's screen measures 5.7 inches diagonally, and it has a Quad HD 2560×1440 pixel resolution when it's in 2D mode. The thread doesn't elaborate how that changes when the phone's in "4V" (holographic) mode. When the RED Hydrogen One switches to 4V mode, the display brightness dims down a bit and "out pops a better-than-3D image" without any glasses require, Mr. Jannard said.

The phone's body is said to weigh about 2 ounces more than most devices its size, and it's bigger and thicker than most other 5.7 devices (by a few millimeters). The extra size and weight are attributable to the industrial design, build materials, and the 4,500mAh capacity battery's internal casing, according to Mr. Jannard.

As for the Hydrogen One's modular system, it provides power and data in both directions is designed to be "stackable". The team envisions battery modules, cinema-grade camera modules, and a variety of others.

RED Hydrogen One Carrier Support and Release

Mr. Jannard says that carrier support for the RED Hydrogen One is "unprecedented", but that the company isn't able to reveal any details yet. He hinted that the carrier-unlocked variant will ship this summer, before the carrier-locked version, and that the RED will start previewing it in April.

The Hydrogen One will start at $1,195 when it launches later this year.
