Razer Phone Update Adds HDR in Netflix, Dolby 5.1 Audio, and Meltdown/Spectre Patches

The Razer Phone has been praised for its 120Hz refresh rate, which delivers an incredibly smooth user experience when the software supports it. It was a little disheartening to learn, then, that the top-of-the-line smartphone couldn't display high dynamic range (HDR) videos from Netflix. But Razer heard those complaints loud and clear, and it's rolling out an over-the-air update to address them. It adds support for Netflix HDR and Dolby 5.1 audio, and includes patches for both Meltdown and Spectre.

The list of smartphones that can show HDR content from Netflix is rather small, as we've covered previously. The LG G6 is the only phone that supports Dolby Vision on Netflix, and the LG V30, Galaxy Note 8, Xperia XZ Premium, Xperia XZ1, and now the Razer Phone are the only ones compatible with the streaming service's other HDR codecs. Not every show and movie is HDR-enabled, but the ones that are boast superior brightness and color contrast.

The over-the-air update puts the Razer Phone's front-facing stereo speakers, which Razer heavily emphasized during the phone's launch, to good use. They've been certified by THX and support Dolby Vision sound, and feature a pair of dedicated amplifiers — one for each speaker. If they didn't sound great before, the update's support for Dolby 5.1 surround sound will surely make them better than ever.

Other changes packed into the new Razer Phone firmware include camera optimizations that tune and improve photo quality and fix an issue that caused some images to appear yellow, plus squash miscellaneous bugs and improve the camera app's performance. The Razer team has updated the theme icons to a dark style, and included January's Android security update, which contains a patch for Meltdown and Spectre.

The update's rolling out now. If you're the lucky owner of a Razer Phone, check your handset for a notification.
