The start of the first full week of each new month, Google gives the Android community of some love in the form of Android security updates. This happened just last month with July's Android's security patches and today, hot on the trail of Android Pie, Google has published the August patches. The amount of time it takes Google to get these security updates will depend since they like to do staged rollouts (as do other smartphone companies. Although, if you're anxious to get the update on your Pixel 2 XL, Google Pixel, Pixel XL, Pixel 2, Nexus 6P, Nexus 5X, and Pixel C then you can follow a previous tutorial we wrote up that shows how to do it from the system images.
These system images for devices get published on Google's Factory images page. And the best thing is, if you follow the tutorial we wrote, then you won't lose any of your data as long as you remove the -w flag from the script that is included in the full system image. The only requirement to accomplish this task is that you download the full system image directly from Google's website. File sizes of these full system images can range from ~900MB for the Pixel C all the way up to ~1.5GB for the Pixel 2. Naturally, it is advised that you download this update from your home broadband connection or at least WiFi from your smartphone.
Google currently maintains two separate security bulletins for Android each month. The regular Android Security Bulletin is universal and that needs to be applied to all Android devices around the world. These patches are given to OEMs at least a month ahead of time so they have enough time to prepare their phones, but some companies just can't do that. Using Samsung as an example, they have released 15 new devices so far this year. Which is actually quite the improvement as they put 41 different phones on the market in 2017. We do have 4 months left in the year but I'm hoping they continue to just focus on a limited number of devices. This will actually help security updates go out faster along with major Android version updates as well (if the company decides to put enough people on the project.
This Android security update resolves 42 issues in total. The bulletin for Pixel/Nexus devices has 32 fixes and there are no functional updates this month. All of the download links for the compatible devices can be found at the links below along with the full Android Security Bulletins.
