The LG V30 was announced on August 31 at IFA 2017 as LG's flagship smartphone for the second half of this year. Its high-end list of specifications included a 6-inch WQHD+ (2880×1440) display, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 system-on-chip, 4GB of RAM paired with 64GB of storage, a dual rear camera with a 16MP standard-angle and 13MP wide-angle sensor, and a 3300mAh battery. No matter how you slice it, the V30's an impressive handset.
The LG V30 ran Android 7.1 Nougat out of the box, but LG promised an update to Android Oreo. In November, it said it'd release the upcoming update as a preview through the LG OS Preview Program in South Korea, and a few weeks later made good on its promise.
Now, LG's rolling out the stable Android 8.0 Oreo update for LG V30 owners in South Korea. The company said that feedback from over 500 customers helped it optimize every app for Oreo in order to ensure a smooth experience.
The Android Oreo update for the LG V30 minimizes power consumption when the phone's not in use and cuts down on boot time. It doesn't support Project Treble, Google's modular platform designed to make Android updates faster and easier, but it's packed with Oreo features such as picture-in-picture (PiP) mode and high-quality Bluetooth codecs such as LDAC.
The update became available Tuesday as an over-the-air (OTA) for V30 owners in South Korea. Users will receive a software update notification on their devices, or can opt to use LG PC Suite to perform the upgrade via desktop.
The question of when the Oreo update will reach LG V30 units in other countries remains a mystery, but there's a good chance it'll roll out in early 2018. That's in line with LG's timeline — the V30 only recently shipped to regions in Europe and India.
